Sustainability
at Procona

Long before everyone started doing 'something' with sustainability, we introduced reusable packaging systems. Sustainability isn't our marketing — it's our origin story.

The Problem

Floriculture has a packaging waste problem

The global cut flower industry moves billions of stems annually. The packaging that gets them there? Mostly single-use, mostly destined for landfill. The industry needs a circular solution.

Millions of single-use items annually

Traditional cardboard boxes, plastic wraps, and single-use containers are used once and discarded — creating mountains of packaging waste in the floral supply chain.

Transport inefficiency drives emissions

Round buckets and poorly designed packaging waste pallet space. More wasted space means more trucks on the road and more CO2 per stem delivered.

Water stress reduces flower lifespan

Flowers without access to water during transit arrive stressed, with reduced vase life. This leads to higher waste at retail — flowers that never reach the consumer.

Landfill is the default destination

Wet cardboard contaminated with flower residue and mixed plastics cannot be easily recycled. Most floral packaging ends its life in landfill or incineration.

Our Approach

Three pillars of sustainable packaging

Every decision we make is guided by three principles: Reuse first, Recycle always, Reduce everything.

Reuse

Our products are engineered for repeated use in demanding supply chains. Each reuse cycle eliminates one single-use package from the waste stream.

Flower buckets: reusable 80–100 times
PP5 plastic collars: reusable 40–50 times
Lids: designed for multi-use durability
Amsterdam model: built for infinite-loop operations
Each reuse = one less package in landfill

Recycle

From production to end-of-life, our materials are chosen for recyclability. We close the loop by building with recycled content and designing for full recyclability.

50% regranulate (recycled) materials in production
Porto 10: made from recycled material
100% recyclable at end of life
FSC-certified cardboard collars
Polypropylene PP5 — widely recyclable plastic

Reduce

Our rectangular design reduces waste at every stage — from optimized pallet loading to retail-ready presentation that eliminates repacking entirely.

25% better pallet loading than round buckets
4% less flower loss through superior protection
Retail Ready: no repacking labor or materials
Rectangular design eliminates wasted pallet space
Reuse cycle eliminates continuous new production

Life Cycle Analysis

We don't just claim sustainability — we prove it

Our Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) tool provides demonstrable, third-party verified data on the environmental impact of every shipment. We quantify the CO2 savings so you can report with confidence.

Demonstrable CO2 savings per shipment

Our LCA calculates exact emissions reductions based on your specific routes, volumes, and reuse cycles.

Procona vs. single-use comparison

Full lifecycle comparison including production, transport, use phase, and end-of-life — showing clear advantages on every metric.

Total cost includes environmental cost

True total cost of ownership factors in waste handling, disposal fees, and carbon impact alongside purchase price.

Environmental Impact Comparison

Procona reusable system Low impact
50% recycled input 80-100x reuse 100% recyclable
Single-use packaging High impact
100% virgin material 1x use Often landfill

Over its lifetime, a single Procona bucket replaces up to 100 single-use packages. The cumulative CO2 reduction compounds with every reuse cycle.

Circular Economy

Designed for circular life

Every Procona follows a closed-loop lifecycle — from recycled production through dozens of reuse cycles, and finally back to recycled material.

01

Production

Manufactured with 50% regranulate (recycled) polypropylene, reducing virgin plastic demand from day one.

02

First Use

Grower fills the Procona with flowers and water. The sealed system keeps flowers hydrated from farm to shelf.

03

Transport

Rectangular shape enables 25% better pallet loading. Fewer trucks per shipment means measurably lower CO2 emissions.

04

Retail

Retail Ready packaging goes straight to the shop floor. No repacking, no extra materials, no wasted labor.

05

Return

Empty Proconas nest inside each other for space-efficient return logistics — minimizing backhaul transport impact.

06

Cleaning

Industrial washing returns each unit to like-new condition. Procona also offers professional washing machines.

07

Reuse

Back to step 2. Each Procona bucket completes this cycle 80–100 times before showing meaningful wear.

08

End of Life

100% recyclable into new polypropylene products. The material lives on — nothing goes to waste.

Steps 2–7 repeat 80–100 times before end of life

Built for circularity from day one

Every Procona is made from 50% regranulate (recycled) material and is 100% recyclable at end of life. The complete system — bucket, collar, and lid — is designed for disassembly and material recovery, ensuring nothing goes to waste.

Sustainable Facility

Our commitment extends beyond the product

Pagter's headquarters in Oud Gastel is gas-free and built to the highest sustainability standards. Our modern, energy-efficient facility — operational since 2021 — reflects the same values we put into every Procona.
